Microsoft Update Causing Systems to Crash (11th March 2021)

Microsoft has confirmed that its March 2021 updates are causing Windows 10 devices to crash with the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) when printing.

Summary

After installing KB5000802 a user might receive an APC_INDEX_MISMATCH error with the Blue Screen of Death when attempting to print to certain printers in some apps. It is reported that both client and server Windows versions are affected by this cumulative update.

  • Client: Windows 10, version 20H2; Windows 10, version 2004; Windows 10, version 1909; Windows 10, version 1809; Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2019; Windows 10, version 1803
     
  • Server: Windows Server, version 20H2; Windows Server, version 2004; Windows Server, version 1909; Windows Server, version 1809; Windows Server 2019; Windows Server, version 1803

Solutions

In the event that you would have encountered the BSOD, the following steps are recommended:

  • To manually uninstall the KB5000802 update follow these steps:
  • Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
  • Click on View Update History
  • Click on Uninstall updates link.
  • Locate the update and click on Uninstall.

If youre unable to uninstall the patch via Control Panel, you can also use the following Command Prompt or PowerShell command to remove the patch manually:

wusa /uninstall /kb:[id]

In the above command, you would need to replace the KB ID with the one that you wish to uninstall.

If youre on v2004 or 20H2, the command would be wusa /uninstall /kb:5000802.

For version 1909/1903, the command is wusa /uninstall /kb:5000808.
