Windows Server 2012 reaches end of support in October 2023 (06th July 2022)

Ref# AL2022_45 | Date: Jul 6th 2022

Description

Microsoft reminded customers that Windows Server 2012/2012 R2 will reach its extended end-of-support (EOS) date next year, on October 10, 2023.

Summary

Once EOS has been reached, Microsoft will no longer be providing technical support or bug fixes for newly discovered issues that may impact the usability or stability of servers running the two products. Microsoft recommends customers migrate applications and workloads to Azure to run more securely.

What are the choices available?

It is recognized by Microsoft that SQL Server and Windows Server run many business-critical applications that may require additional time to modernize. Businesses that have Software Assurance or subscription licenses under an enterprise agreement enrollment will be able to purchase Extended Security Updates. This will provide three additional years of security updates for SQL Server 2012, Windows Server 2012 or 2012 R2.

In terms of pricing for Extended Security Updates, Microsoft states that they will only be charging for on-premise deployments.

The Guyana National CIRT recommends that users and administrations who want to keep their servers running and still receiving bug fixes and security updates to upgrade to Windows Server 2019 and SQL Server 2019.
