Get Safe Online

On March 25, 2019, Guyana signed a Memorandum of Understanding “MoU” with UK-based not-for-profit organisation Get Safe Online to “foster a partnership and provide an avenue for technical cooperation between the two parties for facilitating, strengthening and promoting online security in Guyana”. The MoU is in keeping with Government of Guyana’s mandate to improve cybersecurity preparedness and Government’s response through proactive security measures and information sharing mechanisms.

The signing of the MoU falls under the U.K. Commonwealth Cyber Security Programme which was launched following the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting in April 2018. Part of the Programme’s deliverables saw Guyana and nine other Commonwealth countries launching a cybersecurity website with guidance from Get Safe Online to promote comprehensive online safety advice and information on the latest online safety risks, specific to persons in those countries. Guyana’s website, getsafeonline.gy , was launched on April 1, 2019. In addition to the websites, a series of public awareness campaigns will run throughout the next 12 months to raise maximum awareness about online safety among the general public. The aim is to help everyone, from the most online savvy to those who are less confident using the internet become more risk-aware and better protected online. Other countries that have benefitted from this initiative are Antigua & Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Dominica, Jamaica, Grenada, St. Vincent & The Grenadines and St. Lucia.
